A common tell-tale sight that a dog’s anal glands need to be expressed is when a he or she starts scooting. Anal Glands are two small sacs located on either side of a dog’s anus that collect oily secretions from sebaceous glands. External Expression is done by using a tissue or cloth to gently squeeze the anal glands and massage out the fluid. Internal Expression is done by inserting a gloveed index finger into the anus and gently squeezing each anal sac (one at a time) between the index finger and thumb. Internal Expression is more effective, but a veterinary technician is required to perform the procedure.
