Vaccination strategies – core and non-core
Determining the best vaccination strategy for each pet is part of our service to clients at Newport Center Animal Hospital. This includes both core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are those that are vital to your pet’s health and may be required by law. Non-core vaccines are those we may recommend based on your pet’s unique risk factors and lifestyle. We will make specific recommendations after interviewing you and examining your pet.
Canine and feline vaccinations
Puppies need a series of core vaccinations and boosters before they are a year old. Adult dogs will need the following shots at regular intervals as well:
- Canine Hepatitis
- Distemper
- Leptospirosis
- Parvovirus
- Rabies
Non-core vaccinations include:
- Lyme disease for dogs who spend a lot of time near wooded areas
- Bordetella (Kennel cough) for dogs who are frequently in group situations
- Canine influenza (Dog flu) for dogs with weak respiratory systems or who spend time in group care
The following are essential vaccines for kittens and cats:
- Calicivirus
- Distemper
- Feline herpesvirus
- Rabies
Non-core vaccines you may want to consider include:
- Bordetella for cats living or temporarily staying in group settings
- Chlamydia for cats exposed to other cats with respiratory distress and signs of eye infection
- Feline immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) for cats who have gotten into fights with other cats and broken the skin
- Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) for outdoor cats and kittens born to infected mothers
